If there is a platform that has grown exponentially during the last year it is Tik Tok. We have spent the last 12 months dancing to new viral routines, making dalgona coffee, and laughing at a variety of wacky and wonderful, viral videos. Sometimes the content makes us laugh, sometimes it makes us cringe, sometimes we learn something new; but one thing is for sure, it is always addictive.
Tik Tok has become a subculture of its own in the online world. And while some might have joined the platform thinking it was purely trying to replace Vine, Tik Tok has utterly re-imagined the space, allowing the user to express their creativity through new video formats. As more and more people join the platform, our curiosity for Tik Tok kept growing, so we decided to reach out to someone who could share their knowledge and tips with us.
We spoke to Jun Kasari about his success on Tik Tok, an influencer from Mexico and Japan who recently hit 190K followers on the platform. He believes that the sudden hype around Tik Tok is due to the short video format of the platform. As it allows us (the users), to spend hours watching content and still feel like time has flown by. He also mentioned that the wide diversity of videos allow users to always find something relatable or explore something new. As the platform will always suggest new videos based on your interactions with the platform, which allows the user to stay entertained and engaged.
The type of content that gets the most engagement can vary based on the user, which has allowed videos of different nature to go viral. However, based on Jun’s experience, comedy is one of the most popular themes on Tik Tok. He believes that if you find something that makes people laugh, it will be more likely for your videos to be shared with a wider audience.

On TikTok, it is relatively easy to gain followers as the platform allows more videos to go viral than other platforms. As users keep on engaging with multiple videos and creators, it is important to build a relationship with your followers and stay in touch with them. Without a base of followers that support you, one of your videos might go viral but it will not allow your account to grow as you desire.

Jumping on trends is an amazing route to get people to find your account. However, replicating the viral video exactly as it is will not make users curious about your content. Find a way to add who you are to the trend.
Fact: 83% of TikTok users have posted a video.
Tik Tok has been downloaded over 2 billion times, which means that there is a vast amount of users and content created on the platform. For that reason, it is important to stay active and post regularly, so your account does not sink. A good way to do this is to monitor trends and jump on them as quickly as possible, so new users can find you easier. Remember to use the original audio of the trend and the hashtags!

In the beginning, Jun used to create funny videos but he realised that people were curious about his link between Mexico and Japan. So he combined the two of them, and started creating videos funny videos that related to his experience in Mexico having Asian roots. The key takeaway from this experience is that once you start building a community of followers, it is good to have something that makes you stand out from the crowd.
